Houston faces chaos as 80 mph winds down power lines on US 290 near the 610 loop.
Over 1 MILLION customers are reportedly without power across the area, and rush hour traffic is brought to a standstill following the severe weather. There are also reports of a tornado touching down in northwest Houston.

⚠️ Confirmed: A significant decline in internet connectivity has been registered in parts of Texas with high impact to Houston; the losses in service are attributed to power cuts and damaged infrastructure amid storm surges, flood and heavy rainfall.

Picture from emergency management in Harris County, Texas, show extensive damage to electrical infrastructure.

Power out for nearly 1/3 of county and over 1M+ for all of Texas and growing.

Unbelievable.
A wide swath of hurricane winds just passed through a good portion of the #Houston metro this evening. Probably some embedded brief tornado touchdowns as well.
Doppler estimates had some portions of winds up to 111mph+ (cat.3) at an elevated level. #txwx #htxwx pic.twitter.com/PU7UuUVw6N— Collin Myers (@collinmyerswx) May 17, 2024
